The Transport and Equipment division of the CIR Group was at EXPOCARGA, with news, launches and even recognition.
At its impressive stand, the brand displayed trucks, machinery and trailers. To find out more details, we spoke with Alejo Maisonnave, General Manager of Transport and Equipment at CIR.
What can you tell us about the latest developments in Volvo trucks?
We brought two new products related to electromobility; The “vedette” is the 48-ton truck, a vehicle that has already been approved and some of which have already been sold.
It is a truck that at first glance looks like any other Volvo, but with the added bonus of being 100% battery-powered. This product was launched by the brand a few years ago and is now the leader with over 50% of trucks in the United States and Europe.
How did they manage to bring such important news?
It was a very strong gamble to convince Volvo that both Uruguay and the representative were up to the task. They chose Chile and Brazil to land this product in Latin America, but we managed to convince them.

We have shown that there are incentives in Uruguay, that the government and institutions are aligned on environmental issues and electromobility. Now the trucks are running on the route and we are already analyzing the first results.
What can you tell us about electrical machines?
Volvo started with the electrification of small equipment, because it is the first thing that is needed in cities due to the noise issue, which is something that changes a lot. Volvo is already taking steps, and currently has a 20-ton excavator with a three-cubic-meter shovel. FOR EXPOCARGA we brought a 2.5-ton excavator.
Did Randon also bring news?
For the exhibition we brought something really cool, which is a semi-trailer that has cutting-edge technology. The eternal problem with flatbed semi-trailers is that they get crushed by the elevators, but with this option this problem ends because it has an aluminum floor.

A modular manufacturing system has been designed that allows us to weigh between 500 and 600 kilos less, in a 6,000 kilo equipment, that's a lot. Nowadays, every extra kilo you carry is a profitability problem; we are trying to solve the problem of the carrier.
The CIR Group is over 90 years old and has been associated with Randon for 35 years. Randon trusted us to open the market in Uruguay, saw the potential for after-sales service, and we have undoubtedly achieved significant growth. With Randon, we have been able to grow significantly in after-sales service, providing comprehensive services. Doing this with semi-trailers was impossible five years ago, but today more and more customers are joining us. The Transport and Equipment division employs 150 people, 100 of whom are mechanics; we have 11 operations of different sizes of services.
Why recognition for Tirapu?
We want to always be close to the customer, not only in words, but also in actions. We wanted to surprise Luis San Martín by remembering the founder Don Doroteo y Tirapu, who in his history bought 110 Volvo trucks.

Achieving this in a model company like Tirapu is not easy. That is why we wanted to offer our recognition by presenting a plaque; it was a very pleasant shared moment.
