José Luis Falero, Minister of MTOP, visited the event and spoke with us

“We have an opportunity that we cannot miss, which has to do with positioning the country – in terms of entry and exit from Mercosur to the world – as the true logistics hub, which we can become and we are on the way to that,” he assured.

The Minister said he was “convinced that Uruguay has a unique opportunity for development and that globally they see it in the same way: as a gateway to Mercosur”. He highlighted the country’s multimodal transport, logistics and geographical location, which is surrounded by water, as advantages. Finally, he indicated that collaboration between the public and private sectors is vital; and he thanked the private sector for its commitment to the country’s future. He also called for competitiveness and complementarity between the different types of transport: road, river and air.

The head of Transport visited Expocarga 2023 and spoke at the opening ceremony of this event that brought together leaders and suppliers from various sectors, manufacturers of commercial vehicles, buses and major players in the trailer and distribution sector, highlighting trends in electric mobility, digitalization and urban logistics.

In his speech, Falero highlighted the opportunity that Uruguay has to position itself as a relevant logistics hub, facilitating the entry and exit of Mercosur to the world. “We have an opportunity that we cannot miss, which has to do with positioning the country – in terms of entry and exit of Mercosur to the world – as the true logistics hub, which we can become and we are on the way to that,” he assured.

He also recalled that his department has been carrying out a series of actions in this direction: attempting to readjust the road infrastructure and implementing a historic works plan in a single government term. He cited as an example the construction of new roads such as Route 6, which will connect the country from south to north and will allow for the decongestion of Route 5, as well as the reinforcement of transversal routes such as 20, 14 and 81. These improvements will help reduce costs and increase competitiveness.
